Seven-month check-in

Two weeks ago, Remy celebrated her 7-month birthday and assumed the position for the ritual chair photo.

And for anyone wondering whether Remy was genetically blessed with our impeccable taste in fashion...why, yes.

Yes she was.

Mmmm, polyester.  With just a hint of spandex.

Nanny Boo Boo

So, bad news guys.  The new nanny didn't make it.

Her official 4-day career at our house (for which she was out sick for a day-and-a-half) started on a downward spiral almost immediately, with visible shock and annoyance after witnessing just a taste of Rowan's disdain for structure, discipline, logic and peace.  The decision to subcontract her swing-pushing duties at the park to a couple willing middle schoolers (or maybe it was the way she practically ran to her car at the end of the day) was pretty much the final nail in the coffin, and her supremely brief stint was closed out with a firey spectacle of You-Can't-Fire-Me-I-Quit.

The job was "not really what I was expecting," she said.

My mom took a moment to think about what one might expect being a nanny to three kids under the age of six, and she could come up with nothing other than the slightly lackluster reality of neediness, sibling rivalry, tantrums and a generous helping of whine.  Cushioned by just enough good manners, funny commentary and outstanding wardrobe to keep the circumstances from being completely ridiculous.

Rowan and I were a bit confused as to why our new friend, whom -- for the record -- we liked very much, came and went so quickly.  My mom explained that that she "made bad choices."  The upside to her lack in judgment was the one-week return of My Mary while we waited for our new nanny, Viviane, to start.

Viviane was recently an au pair for a family with four kids -- two of which were boys.  So my mom is guessing that this job is about exactly what she was expecting.

Earlier this week, I reported to my mom that Viviane is "a good nanny who makes good choices."

"I think we should just keep her," I said.

That's good news, as roughly 50 percent of the eight nannies we've known have been fired fairly quickly.  Given that my mom hired them all, it looks like she, too, has "made bad choices."

It's cool, though.  We've been rolling with the chaos, more or less.  Rowan has busied herself committing to memory all the latest songs and, coincidentally, has been quickly mastering all the lyrics to Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Getting Back Together."

My mom would like to dedicate Rowan's most heartfelt rendition to Nannies No. 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Taylor Swift ain't got nothin' on my sister

She may not be game for ballet, tap or gymnastics, but Rowan is always interested in penning new songs.  A couple months ago, our nightly traditional of choosing a bedtime song for Mom to sing to us gave way to open mic for Rowan to try out her latest works.  In an effort to prolong her time til lights-out, they tend to have about 14 verses with a chorus thrown in here and there to tie em all together.

The subject of her music tends to center around loving something "sooo muuuuch," to the point that the critics may argue that all her songs start to sound the same.  But Rowan listens to enough Sirius Hits 1 to know that, when it comes to pop music, love and excess are the order of the day.  She's confident her first tour will sell out, and just so she's prepared, she's begun working out her choreography, as well.

And it's suddenly clear to us that, with these moves, dance class wasn't the best use of her time or creative genius, anyway.

Ever the multi-tasker, Rowan is simultaneously composing, transcribing and
performing her music.  At the public library.

Occupational considerations

Rowan: Can I be a fireman when I grow up?

Mommy: You can be anything you want to be when you grow up.  But I'd worry about you if you were a fireman.  Sometimes they have to go into burning buildings when they put out fires.

Rowan: (pause) Okay, then I think I'll be a princess or a fairy.
